Neither option is automatically better for every home.

Tank water heaters store a supply of hot water that's ready when you need it. Tankless water heaters heat water as it flows through the unit instead of keeping dozens of gallons hot throughout the day. That difference affects everything from upfront cost and available space to hot-water capacity and energy use.
