Efficient Techniques for Successful Toilet Installation
- Preparation and Removal of Old Toilet: Before installing the new toilet, turn off the water supply and flush the old toilet to drain the tank. Remove any remaining water with a sponge. Then, disconnect the water supply line and remove the nuts that secure the toilet to the floor. Carefully lift the old toilet away.
- Inspect the Flange and Repair if Necessary: The toilet flange, which connects the toilet to the drainpipe, should be in good condition. If it’s damaged or too low compared to the floor level, it will need to be repaired or replaced to prevent leaks. If you need help replacing the toilet flange, watch this video.
- Check the Wax Ring: The wax ring ensures a watertight seal between the toilet and the drainpipe. Always use a new wax ring when installing a toilet. Some modern toilets may come with a rubber or foam ring, which can also be used.
- Positioning the Toilet: Carefully place the toilet over the flange and wax ring, aligning the mounting holes with the flange bolts. Press down to compress the wax ring and create a good seal.
- Secure the Toilet: Once the toilet is positioned, secure it to the floor by tightening the nuts onto the bolts. It’s important to do this evenly and not to over-tighten, as this could crack the porcelain.
- Reconnect the Water Supply: Reconnect the water supply line to the toilet. Turn on the water and allow the tank to fill. Check for any leaks around the base of the toilet and the connection to the water supply.
- Test the Flush: Flush the toilet several times to ensure it operates correctly and there are no leaks. Check the base for signs of water, which could indicate a poor seal.
- Apply Caulk if Desired: Applying caulk around the base of the toilet is optional but recommended. It creates a clean finish and prevents water from getting under the toilet. However, leave a small gap at the back of the toilet base uncaulked to notice any future leaks.
