A slab leak is a water line failing underneath your foundation. Not a drain, not the sewer. A pressurized supply line, running through or under the concrete your house sits on, losing water around the clock where nobody can see it.

What Causes Slab Leaks in Spring, TX
Worth understanding, because it explains why this area gets so many of them and why yours probably is not the last one your street will see.
We sit on expansive clay. In an August drought it dries out and shrinks. With the first real rain it swells back up. Your foundation moves with it, and the water lines running through and under that slab get pushed one direction and then the other, year after year. Copper does not love being flexed. Eventually a joint gives or a pinhole opens.
Two other things stack on top of that. Our water is hard, 11 to 14 grains per gallon, which is rough on pipe from the inside. And in older houses the lines are copper that has been down there a long time, sometimes wrapped against concrete with nothing left of the protection it went in with.
None of that means your slab is bad or your foundation is failing. It means when a line under there goes, there is usually a real reason, and it is worth knowing which one before anybody starts cutting.

Here is a check you can run yourself in five minutes. Turn off every fixture in the house, then go look at your water meter. If the dial is still moving, you have a leak somewhere on the supply side. That does not prove it is under the slab, but it does tell you to stop wondering and call somebody.
Slab Leak Detection: Finding It Before Anything Gets Opened Up
This is the part that matters most, and it is the part people skip when they are panicking.
We isolate the system to work out which line is losing water and whether it is the hot side or the cold, then we locate the leak before anybody touches concrete. The whole point is to find the spot, not the general area, because the difference between those two is the difference between one opening in your floor and several.
A slab leak is a supply line, so it is leak detection work rather than a camera job. If what you are describing is a drain problem instead, a camera inspection is the right tool, and we will tell you which one you have before we bring the wrong truck.
Once we know where it is and what caused it, you get all your options in writing. Nobody should be quoting a slab leak repair without having located the leak first.
Your Three Slab Leak Repair Options
There is almost never only one way to do this, and the cheapest is not automatically the right one. We will tell you which we would pick for your house and why.
Spot repair through the slab. We open the floor at the leak, fix that section, and close it back up. Cheapest and fastest when the leak is accessible and the rest of the line is sound. The trade-off is that it is inside your house, so there is concrete work and floor covering to put back. And if the line is failing in more than one place, you will be doing this again.
Reroute the line. We abandon the bad run under the slab and route a new line overhead through the attic and walls instead. Nothing gets cut into your foundation at all. It costs more than a spot repair and it means access holes in walls and ceilings, but the new line is somewhere we can reach it forever after. For a single bad run in an older house this is very often the right answer.
Tunnel under the foundation. We access the line from outside by tunneling beneath the slab, so nothing inside the house is disturbed. Your floors, your tile, your kitchen all stay exactly as they are. It is the most expensive of the three and it takes the longest, and sometimes it is the only sensible way in. When the leak is under finished space you cannot afford to tear up, this is what it is for.

When a Slab Leak Means It Is Time to Repipe
Sometimes the honest answer is that fixing this one leak is throwing money at a pipe that is going to keep failing.
If this is your second or third slab leak, or the line we pull out looks like the rest of the system, spot repairs stop making sense. At that point a whole house repipe replaces everything at once and takes the whole problem off the table, instead of paying us to come back and open your floor again next year.
We will say so when we think that is where you are. We will also say so when it is not, because most first slab leaks are just a slab leak.
What Slab Leak Repair Costs, and What Insurance Usually Does
Cost comes down to which of the three repairs your house needs, how deep the line sits, and what is on top of it. A spot repair under a garage floor and a tunnel under a finished kitchen are not the same job and should not carry the same number.
You get a written quote after we have located the leak, before anything is opened. Anybody giving you a slab leak price over the phone is guessing.
On insurance: it depends on your policy and on the cause, and we are plumbers, not your adjuster. What we can tell you is that many policies treat the resulting water damage differently from the pipe repair itself, and that your adjuster is going to want documentation of what we found and where. We will give you that in writing either way, because it costs us nothing and it is the difference between a claim going smoothly and not.

Under-Slab Drain Lines Are a Different Job
Worth separating these out, because people call both of them slab leaks and they are not the same thing.
A slab leak is a pressurized supply line. It loses water constantly and shows up on your bill. An under-slab drain problem is a sewer or drain line beneath the foundation, and it shows up as slow drains, backups, or a smell, not as a water bill.
